Attached to this post is the story of the Chin Poy family and their journey through the trials of allergies and anaphylaxis. Kimberley tells of their son Louis' various treatments, successes and failures and gives contact details of those professionals who provided much needed help.
The Green Gables team stand in awe of Kimberley and Caine and all the family - while the journey continues, we are so happy that Louis is now overcoming some of his allergies and look forward to working with you all over the years ahead. Please forward to anyone you know that may benefit. Click here to download the story.

At Green Gables, the majority of our families come from households where a language other than English is spoken at home either exclusively or as well as English.
A common area of concern expressed by a number of these families is whether or not their children will retain abilities in their parents native language. This conference is designed for both parents and educators. Let us know if you would like to attend with a Green Gables staff-member. /uploads/1/2/9/8/1298121/bilingualism-conference-program_5.pdf The Go4Fun Program is an established healthy lifestyle program to improve health, fitness, self esteem and confidence in children aged 7-13 years who are above their ideal weight.
The program runs over one school term (10 weeks). There are 20 sessions (2 sessions/week, 2hrs/session). All sessions run after school. Sessions include: · Games and activities for kids · Easy, effective ways to improve your child’s self esteem and confidence · Demonstrations, games and tips on healthy foods, label reading and portion sizes · A fun supermarket tour In term 2 there are programs running in Matraville, Caringbah and Hurstville. See attached flyer. /uploads/1/2/9/8/1298121/seslhd_locations_term_2_2012_-_1800_number.pdf This is to let you know that there will be a FREE Introductory Evening coming up early next term. I would appreciate it if you would let the families you work with know about it.

Take a look at the official Harmony Day website (link below) - it's an awesome initiative that really fits well with the diverse cultures we are lucky to have at Green Gables.
"The continuing message for Harmony Day in 2012 is that Everyone Belongs, which means all Australians are a welcome part of our country, regardless of their background. It's a time to reflect on where Australia has come from, recognising the traditional owners of this land. It's also about community participation, inclusiveness and respect – celebrating the different cultures that make Australia a great place to live." (www.harmony.gov.au) Don't hesitate to speak with the teachers if you would like to get involved or have an idea for an activity for the children to enjoy. http://www.harmony.gov.au/ Happy Greek Independence Day!
Attached is the link to the Events calendar for the 30th Greek Festival of Sydney spanning 25th Feb - 25th May 2012. Check it out! http://www.greekfestivalofsydney.com.au/festival12/calendar.htm We have just added the Sun Smart UV Alert to our Home Page.
Our staff check this everyday before taking the children outside to determine the level of sun protection required. The UV Index is a simple way to show the intensity of the sun's UV radiation. The values of the Index range from zero upward; the higher the value, the greater the potential for skin damage. It divides UV radiation levels into:
The UV alert shows when the UV Index is forecast to be 3 or above for the day. It identifies the hours of each day when the UV Index will be 3 or above, so you can stay inside during those times, or use sun protection if you're outside. We attended three seminars:
The final seminar was presented by the President of Child Care NSW, Vicki Skoulogenis, entitled Rethinking School Readiness. Vicki's passion for Early Learning was amazing. What does 'school readiness' mean to you? School Readiness is a major area of interest for many families, however the definition and expectation changes dramatically from one family to another. We all want our children to be given the best possible start in life, and to learn those valuable skills that will help them be at ease in any environment. But how is that best achieved? A good start is to make sure we are all on the same page. Vicki's presentation is attached below - we encourage you to have a look and approach us with any questions or comments. ![]()
